Provide a description or background information about the workshop
For UNDP and UN Women, the achievement of gender equality and empowerment of women in political and electoral processes is a top priority. UNDP/UN Women joint efforts and commitment at global, regional and national level focusses on improving women’s electoral participation, both as voters and as candidates, strengthening institutional capacity of EMBs from a gender perspective, political parties, media, and other institutions contributing to the advancement of gender equality and sustainable democracy. The promotion and strengthening of women leadership and participation in decision-making processes contributes to the achievement of UN WOMEN Strategic Plan 2019-2021 and UNDP 2018-2021 Strategic Plan. UN Women and UNDP Country Offices across all regions are engaged in programmes that support member states’ efforts to translate Women’s Political Participation, Leadership and Representation agendas into practice. It also endeavors to build women’s capacities and to increase opportunities for their participation in political and peace processes at the local, national, and regional level.
Describe the purpose of the workshop
The overall objective of the workshop is to strengthen the capacity of UNDP and UN Women programme staffs working in areas of women leadership and political participation; governance and election to enhance their technical engagement with relevant stakeholders including EMBs, women candidates and voters, national electoral laws and policies from a gender perspective. The training workshop will also provide opportunity for exchange of ideas and best practice between regions and staffs of the two agencies on gender and elections. The workshop will also provide a platform to establish and expand the pool of experts and community of practice in the area of gender and elections.
