BRIDGE Boundary Delimitation for the Election Commission of Pakistan

As part of IFES program the Support for Electoral Reform in Pakistan (SERP) initiated in April 2012, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), in cooperation with the Electoral Commission of Pakistan (ECP), organised a BRIDGE Boundary Delimitation workshop between 14-16 April 2014 in Lahore, Pakistan.

Subsequent to the ruling by The Supreme Court of Pakistan, as per applicable legislation in the Constitution and the Delimitation of Constituencies Act 1974; the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is tasked to carry out the delimitation of Boundaries in Pakistan. Prior to this ruling, the task of delimiting boundaries was vested with the provincial authorities. Therefore in order to empower the EMBs and build capacity of the staff especially those who are envisaged to be involved in all aspects of the upcoming implementation of Boundary Delimitation project; IFES Pakistan, in consultation with the ECP, has organized a BRIDGE workshop on Boundary Delimitation. The workshop was held in Lahore between 14 and 16 April 2014 and attended by Four ECP commissioners, high-level ECP officers and some IFES staff.

The aim of the workshop was to examine the state of boundary delimitation in and the challenges facing the ECP in providing the delimitation of electoral boundaries in Pakistan, and to develop the capacity of a selected number of the ECP staff and provide them with comparative experience and best practices of Boundary delimitation in the world.

The workshop was facilitated by a team of facilitators comprised: Emad Yousef, (Jordan); Sibongile Zimemo (South Africa), Kulsoom Akhtar (IFES Pakistan), and Saeed Khan (Electoral Commission of Pakistan).
